Thanks to all who prayed for me and my pilgrims during our pilgrimage to Rome last week. It was a truly blessed experience for all of us, and I carried all of your intentions to the Tombs of those great Apostles, Sts. Peter and Paul. Particularly blessed were we to celebrate Mass in so many holy places including the Basilica of St. Peter, the Catacombs of St. Priscilla, Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, Santa Maria della Libera in Aquino (the village of St. Thomas Aquinas), the Pontifical North American College and the private Chapel of the Swiss Guards in the Vatican. Notre Dame Seminary Celebrates 90th Anniversary Gala & Auction
Notre Dame Seminary will host its annual Gala & Auction on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 7 to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Seminary located at 2901 South Carrollton Ave. The Seminary is celebrating 90 years of service to the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the dioceses throughout the South by preparing men for the ministerial priesthood. Tickets start at $100 and can be purchased at www.nds.edu or at the seminary. “God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.” (Lk 18:11) I recently heard a quote to the effect that “there are only two types of people in the world: saints who think they are sinners and sinners who think they are saints.” That pretty much sums up the two characters in today’s Gospel. The Pharisee has justified his life, and the Publican has condemned his own. In truth, each of these men was a sinner in some way. As the Evangelist John said: If we say that we have not sinned, then we make God a liar, and His word has no place in our hearts (1 Jn 1:10). So what separates the two men? Simply one fact. Good Shepherd Parish frequently receives calls from “parishioners” to have their children baptized, get a school voucher, get married or serve as a godparent. In order for the parish to agree to these things, the person must be a “registered” and “contributing” parishioner. This isn’t our rule, it’s the rule of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
