Blessed John Paul II!

This morning at the Vatican, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, officially declared “Blessed” the late Pope John Paul II.  The choice of the Feast of Divine Mercy, May 1, 2011 is no accident. Pope John Paul II had a deep devotion to his fellow Pole Sr. Faustina Kowalska and to the Divine Mercy devotion identified with her. In August 2002, in Lagiewniki, Poland where Sr. Faustina lived and died, John Paul II entrusted the entire world  "to Divine Mercy, to the unlimited trust in God the Merciful.” The Decree of his Beatification notes, “Since the beginning of his pontificate, in 1978, John Paul II often spoke in his homilies of the mercy of God. This became the theme of his second encyclical, Dives in Misericordia, in 1980. He was aware that modern culture and its language do not have … [Read more...]

Catholics Come Home

You're going to get used to seeing this logo. Because for the next forty days of Lent, the Archdioceseais running a program called “Catholics Come Home. As part of the program, the Church will run over 17,000 television ads, not to mention radio, print and other media encouraging fallen away Catholics to “Come Home” to the Church during Lent. And to what are they “coming home”? Well, it's not to a building, a “denomination,” or simply our Christian “fellowship.” A clue is in the center of the logo: the Eucharist. They are coming home to our family of love gathered together around Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. They're coming home to a communion of love with the Real Presence of Jesus at its center. How can we help? We can surely be more welcoming. We can embrace … [Read more...]

Renunciation of our Holy Father

Renunciation of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI Last Monday at 5:15am, I received a text on my cell phone from my sister, Ariane, who is a producer for ABC News saying: “The Pope resigned.” I have to say that my first response was “You sure not a hoax?” Most of us were very surprised, and even somewhat saddened by the Holy Father's announcement. And frankly, the word “resignation” doesn't really decribe what happened. Over the life of the Church, there have been at least seven Popes who have done what Pope Benedict did, and it's not really a “resignation,” because there is no one to whom to “resign” the office. As Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, the Holy Father “renounces” or “abdicates” his office, something that has been done at least seven times in the history of the … [Read more...]
